I didn't see where there was 'pleasure' in the killing. Pride in a job well done, yes. And pride in raising her own food, both of which I find totally understandable. Also respectable. It takes a REAL man or woman to kill and clean their own meat, grow gardens, process food of all kinds for future consumption. Some people prefer to get their food from the grocery store, already chopped and packaged, that is fine too. But there is certainly nothing cold or inhumane about raising meat to feed one's family.

Er, I just almost burned the house down making dinner with it the first time. No longer will the grill be under the eaves, there were flames shooting out. Well-fed lamb is rather greasy.

But by god, I ate it anyway. Kind of hard to tell the flavor through the char, but I wasn't going to waste it.

And how else would you talk about the process of making meat, anyway. I don't think anyone's written a romantic poem about picking chicken breasts or steaks out of the butcher's case at the market. It's meat either way, but in this case you guys did the work from (nearly) start to finish. And it IS work.

I found it touching and surprising that you took care early on to not do anything that would even remotely make them seem as pets. That would be the hardest part for me, since I make EVERYTHING pets. My shoes, my toys, my bike, my stuff...everything has a personality, which = trouble if I had to make it into dinner. :)

Let us know how dinner turns out!

Really? It's nasty to humanely raise and then respectfully kill animals for your own family's consumption? It's cold to take responsibility for one's own food, rather than pawn off the job onto factory farms and meat cutters who will shrink-wrap it and take all responsibility for it, so you can sit there in your air-conditioned house, never having shouldered your share of the load that it takes to keep civilization running?

How nice it must be for you "Jo", keeping your head in the sand and letting other people do your dirty work for you, instead of stepping up and doing it yourself. Or are you out there hoeing weeds in the fields, are you slipping on the slaughterhouse floor, are you the one picking tomatoes in 105 degree heat? I know firsthand the labor and dedication and sheer number of people it takes to feed my family: do you?

My goodness, this is quite possibly the coldest blog post I've ever read. What pleasure you seem to have taken in killing. You really are a nasty piece of work.

I would have liked to have had pictures, but both of our hands were busy and I didn't have Seamus around to run the camera. When we do the chickens, he can take pictures. I won't post them here though.

I'm so glad you didn't show any pictures of the process as I'm a big wuss about seeing that type of thing. I did scroll very, very carefully in case there were pictures! I've only had lamb once and didn't really care for it.

Ya, I feel your pain. I think the "bad guys" always do well because they have no shame. They just keep plugging along doing things that normal people would be ashamed of with no guilt or remorse. Just got a real dose of that myself this weekend from a horse trainer. I wonder if there are more of these people these days or if I'm just getting older and finally noticing it more...
